About this exhibition and the artists
About the exhibition
Discover work shaped by a river, a family, and a shared attention to the natural world. Jessica Salazar pairs salvaged driftwood with hand-cut, textured brass, finding inspiration in the small magic of her childhood on Fir Island. Her daughter Isabel draws on camping, exploring, and the natural materials gathered from the family farm. Jessica's father, Stephen N. Schell, translates the textures and asymmetrical beauty of life beside the Skagit River into coil- and slab-built ceramics.
Together, their work connects three generations through wood, metal, clay, and the landscape they call home. This is Stephen and Jessica's second public exhibition together, now joined by Isabel.
Meet the artists
Jessica Salazar | Vida + Luz
Jessica grew up on Fir Island, Washington, where the sandy banks of the Skagit Delta sparked a lifelong sense of wonder. Her work celebrates the small magic of everyday life: unfurling ferns, falling leaves, and light dancing across river currents. Designs begin with distinctive driftwood salvaged from her family's farm, shaped by glacial waters and polished by sand. Hand-cut and textured brass, including moon and celestial forms, reflects the tidal rhythms of the delta. Based outside Seattle, Vida + Luz works with five women artisans through flexible work-from-home opportunities. Jessica reports that 5% of the brand's net proceeds supports Wipe Every Tear.
Isabel “Isa” Salazar | Sunsets + Such
Fourteen-year-old Isabel Salazar lives with her family outside Seattle and loves camping, exploring, and creating art. Much of her driftwood comes from her family's farm on Fir Island near the Salish Sea. She textures each piece of brass by hand and draws inspiration from nature while exploring different styles of art and running her own small business.
Stephen N. Schell | Stephen Schell Ceramics
Stephen has lived on a small farm beside the Skagit River since 1977. He captures the energy, texture, and asymmetrical beauty of that landscape in ceramics built primarily with coils and slabs. High-fired stains and glazes echo Fir Island through the seasons, while river stones and weathered wood sometimes become part of the work. His pieces range from functional vessels and wall displays to abstract compositions. Sharing an exhibition with his daughter Jessica and granddaughter Isabel brings three generations of the family's creative life together.

You do not need an appointment to belong here.
Saltwater was designed to be a place where people can browse, drink a cup of coffee, look at art, meet someone new, or sit for a minute.
Sometimes the best thing happening here won't be on the calendar. That's intentional.
